Project Description Misinformation shapes many people's opinions and therefore causes them to react violently and spread it, as well as harass and attack others. This can even translate into real life, for example when "Pizzagate" conspiracies prompted a man to open fire in a pizzeria. Our "solution" to this is a fake news detector, which scans a compiled database of non-credible news sources (with multiple offenses). When a person is about to post a link to one of these sites, a warning will come up saying, "WARNING: This link may contain false or biased information. Do you wish to proceed?" The sender then has the option to continue or cancel the action-- if they still post it, the first half of the very same warning will be attached to the post visible to all who view it. Underneath the warning are also two options-- to see more information, which opens up a page about what fake news is and how to identify it, or a view link page which opens up the website's homepage for the user to determine the credibility themselves. In the future, we hope for it to become a plugin and create a feedback system in order to continually update and fix the database of fake news, as well as explore other options like opening a link to a Snopes page which would explain why each specific link wouldn't be credible. |
